Where can I download the Oracle 8.1.7 - Downloads Issues

Where can I download the Oracle 8.1.7? I know it is not available in the Oracle official website. I try to find it in the OTN website also but I can't. If you know, please let me know the hyperlink of downloading the software. I am an OCP member and I am notified from other forums that I can download it from the Oracle Intrenet website. Can anyone give me the link?

Hi, samouhk
Oracle 8i has been desupported for a long time and when Oracle desupports products it no longer makes them available for download. The earliest version you will be Oracle9i.
Regards,
Bill Chadbourne

You can contact your Oracle Sales rep, and ask them to assist you in getting a copy.
You can open a Service Request with Oracle Support, to request a copy of the software.
You can contact your local Oracle user group to see whether one of the friendly locals has a copy you can borrow.
You can always monitor eBay for the occasional set of CDs. (For example, 8.0.5 for Solaris appeared today.)
However, as far as I know, once it has become obsolete you simply can not download it from an Oracle site.

License

Hi all,
I knew that Oracle is not a free software and I am not talking about the EXPRESS Edition.
My question :
What is the license of the downloadable Oracle database server that we can get from here : http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/
If it is a DEMO version, what is the limitation ? Number of days ? If yes, how long?
Limited functionality ? If yes, what ?
I just want to learn Oracle (on Linux and Windows), from some tutorials (How-To) I found that we can download Oracle database from the website and install it.
So that's why I courious about what kind of limitation if I use the Oracle database servers that I downloaded from the above website.
Thank you.
Hi,
the download page contains a section
ORACLE TECHNOLOGY NETWORK
DEVELOPMENT LICENSE AGREEMENT
where all these questions are answered.
Regards
Werner
So, if I am not mistaken, for "learning purposes", I can install and use it without any problem. And it seems there is no "technical" limitation in the downloadable software.
I just want to learn Oracle, how to be Oracle DBA, thats all.
Hello,
yes you can do that. As long as you are only learning and testing, there's no legal problem to use the software. In other words you must not earn money with the software.
And the software available for downloading on OTN is the same as on the CDs/DVDs, you would buy.
Werner
An interpretation: if you can turn it off for several weeks and not have any impact on the organization, it is not in production ... and therefore under the 'development' license.
The technical limitation is that Oracle only posts the first release of each version, and posts no patches. Other than that, they want people to evaluate the full capabilities so they do not include any functionality limits and they have never included any time bombs.

OTN Subscription

Hi all,
Our company used to have an Oracle subscription. We used to pay a annual fee and Oracle would send us the developer edition of the latest Oracle products on CD. However, we unsubsribed in year 2003 and now I could not seem to be able to find out where to subscribe again.
My questions are:
1. Is this subscription part of OTN subscription?
2. Where can I subscribe again? Who should I contact? BTW, we are located in Ontario, Canada.
3. I understand there are free downloads on OTN, but we still prefer CD. Is there any option to order the developer edition of the latest Oracle Products on CD?
Thanks a lot.
Zhicheng Liang
Sorry, this program ("TechTracks") is no longer available. CDs ("Media Packs") are available under a Trial License from the Oracle Store: http://oraclestore.oracle.com.
Cheers, OTN

Where can i download database server 8.1.5?

Where can i download database server 8.1.5?
All download links to 8.x looks dead.
Oracle 8x has been out of support for around 4 years now.
If it is some mission critical application that you are running, you can try to get in touch with Oracle support; they might be able to help you with the binaries.
Can you give me a hint how to contact Oracle support?
"support#oracle.com" bounced. I can't find any mail address or contact form under "Support".
Do you have a Metalink account? Assuming you (or your organization) has an Oracle license and a support contract, you (or someone in your organization) should have a Metalink account where you can log a service request to see if someone can find the old media to ship to you. Since 8.1.5 has been desupported so long, however, Oracle support may not have media for whatever operating system you need close at hand.
Justin
We are developers. Our customer have the licence and media.
Since customer is in Iran, we have no easy access to the media.
I can't register to MySupport, because i have no "Support Identifier".
You're realistically going to need to get your customer to provide the media.
If you are not an Oracle customer, Oracle isn't going to provide you media for long desupported versions of the database. Presumably, you are using the customer's Oracle license in order to do the development, right? Assuming the customer is properly licensed, they should have a support identifier and should be able to request the media on your behalf (though there may be odd legal issues because it's Iran). If neither you nor your customer is a licensed Oracle customer, you're definitely out of luck...
Justin
The customer was able to order media for us.
Thx.

Is it legal to request old versions of Oracle software?

Hi all,
I recently purchased Steve Adams' book Oracle 8i Internal Services.
On the authors website (www.ixora.com.au/scripts) there are scripts which are to be run
in conjunction with the text.
I have done this with 10 XE but it doesn't appear to work so well. On the database
forum I requested (for the princely sum of €5 (for postage and trouble - not for the
product itself)) that I be sent a CD if some kind soul had one lying around.
I was then informed that this was illegal - I did put "as long as it's legal and above board
and all that" in my original request.
I wish to emphasise that I am doing this to learn - I am not trying to do anything illegal and/or
that would be a breach of Oracle's software licencing terms.
Can any learned person clarifiy if it is acceptable to obtain old versions of Oracle's software
in this manner?
TIA and rgs,
Paul...
I recently purchased Steve Adams' book Oracle 8i Internal Services. As mentioned in the other thread, Oracle9i can be downloaded from Oracle e-Delivery website but Oracle8i is not longer available for download. Please see this thread for similar discussion -- Re: oracle 8i and 9i

I also believe it is illegal and you have to get the software directly from Oracle or from an Oracle Partner -- You could contact your Oracle Sales representative to confirm.
If you have an access to My Oracle Support (MOS) website and a valid CSI number, you could try to log a SR and ask Oracle Support the Media Pack (though I believe you will be requested to use another version since Oracle8i is no longer supported).
Thanks,
Hussein

A thought struck me - while it may be a breach of the licence to redistribute
software that one has downloaded from the Oracle website, does the same
apply to an Oracle CD that was purchased?
One that was previously used? Never previously used?
Paul...
Hussein
Hi Paul,
If I am not mistaken, it is about the source of the files. Whether it is downloadable from OTN/e-Delivery website or it is delivered on CDs/DVDs, the source of the files is Oracle.
And, afwan for your shoukran :)
Thanks,
Hussein
I think that it is a shame that old versions
of Oracle are not available for download
for people like myself who have purchased
older texts and want to go through the
examples.

Oracle 8i,  the lack of available downloads, & the OCP exams

I am pleased that oracle gave us access to the database and the other goodies.
However, they prematurely removed almost everything for 8i except for the database itself
even though the oracle 8i DBA track seems to be no where near retirement.
So as a humble request, please restore the 8i downloads.
William Coldiron
Hello - we are not sure as to what other 8i products you are looking for. As you correctly stated, all downloads for the database are currently available at: http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/oracle8i/content.html
We recommend that you contact the OCP group directly by e-mail at ocpexam_ww#oracle.com and find out whether or not you can get software from them. Also, you can write to otn_us#oracle.com for other software needs that you may have.
Best Regards, OTN Team

Best Regards, OTN Team I was mainly referring to the OEM packs: tuning, diagnostic, and change management.
I can probably complete the last two exams without them, but I actually want to be
able to know what I doing after the exams.
Thanks,
William Coldiron - 3/5 x DBA
