Performing Transactions using Oracle Data Control in VB - OO4O and Wizards(Archived)

I have looked everywhere on the Oracle OLE help file and can not find anything to do with this.
Part 1
How can I perform transactions using the Oracle Data Control, If my users are updating a DBGrid?
Part 2
How can I set a Dynaset to a DBGrid without using a Data Control?
Part 3
Anyone got any Pro's and Con's about using ADO or OO4O from VB.

Accessing TimestTen data from an application

Hi,
Not sure weather my subject line is correct.
Requirement is, we want to fecth data from timesten using some application. On serching the forum and net we came to know that we can't create SP in Timesten.
What is the alternative to acheive our goal.
Example : at present we have a sp which fetches data from the database as per the user requirement ( From a GUI ). we want to replicate the same using TimesTen to enhance performance and reduce response time.
Please suggest.
Rajib
I think I must be misunderstanding this question.
Applications fetch data from databases (TimesTen included) by connecting to the database using a supported API (ODBC or JDBC for TimesTen) and then using the API to send SQL requests (SELECT ... etc.) to the database and receiving back the results. Stored procedures are typically used to encapsulate some of the application logic, together with some of the SQL, within the database but there is nothing that you can do in an SP that you cannot also do in the application using application logic and SQL.
Perhaps you could clarify your question as I am sure I am missing something here...
Chris
I am sorry I was not clear in my question.
Actually we are using simple disk based system. We want to test the performance of the same using timesten. If we get satisfactory performance enhancement from TimesTen we will be going ahead and impement it.
The issue is that we want to replicate the same thing with TimesTen that we are doing without using it. As very new to timesten and still in process of going through the entire docs, we are stucked here..
Please feel free to ask for any more clarification
So, how does your system work now in terms of data management? Does it currently use a relational database or something else? What does the architecture of your current solution look like? What language(s) is it written in (C, C++, Java, ...) and what platform(s) does it run on?
Chris
Yes we currently use Oracle 10g rel 2. The production architecture on which we have to finally install and implement TimesTen will be Oracle 10g RAC database on AIX.
We use Java.
but at present we are testing this on our local database which is also 10g rel 2 but on windows (32 bit).
On the basis of what you have said so far I would guess that you should be investigating:
1. Putting the required data into TimesTen instead of Oracle (either standalone TT or TT as a cache for Oracle)
2. Make your Java GUI connect to TT instead of Oracle
3. Re-write any stored procedure logic currently in Oracle as application side Java code.

Hi,
We have created Oracle stored procedures for retrieving data from oracle databse.
Is there any way to retriev data from TimesTen using oracle stored procedures
No, not at present.
Sorry,
Chris
Hi Chris,
there must be some way out ..
We have coded most of our codes in oracle Stored procedures and JAVA
so if we intend to use TimesTen we will have to rewrite the code ?
So what if any one wishes to migrate from Disk based database to TimesTen ?
Please suggest .....
Regards.
Well, many disk based database applications do not use stored procedures so this is not by any means a universal problem.
We are adding PL/SQL support to TimesTen but it won't be available for quite some time (maybe 18 months or more).
So unfortunately, if you want to use TimesTen, your only current option is basically to re-write your SP logic as client side application logic.

Can we use OWB to migrate data(of image datatype) from SQLServer to Oracle?

Hi,
I have a table in sql server database which has a field of 'image' datatype. I want to migrate/populate the data to my oracle database as BLOB/CLOB data.
Is it possible to do this using OWB? If it is possible, could you please help me how to do it?
If it is not possible to do it using OWB, are there any ways to do it. I know that we can do it using gateways. I dont want to go for it as it needs to buy a license for it.
Thanks in advance,
SriGP.
Use the ODBC Gateway with OWB? Might have to move the images via the SQLPlus COPY command.
Cheers
David
Well, if you just need to do basic pulls of SQL Server tables (i.e you're not trying hit any remote stored procedures, etc), then you don't need Gateways.
Use Oracle's basic Heterogenous Services (it's built into the database) to configure your target Oracle database itself to access the SQL Server source via an ODBC connection (system DSN on Windows, ODBC.ini entry on linux). Then as far as OWB is concerned it's actually just another Oracle source that you hit over a DB link.
Way easier and cheaper than using Gateways if you don't need the extra power or intelligence of the gateways module. We've done it many times it works just fine.
I have been sourcing SQL Server data for a while, but using a Gateway. However, now we need to copy daily large strings (over 32K characters) with XML strings and I have not been successful. Apparently there is no straightforward solution for this. Tech support recommended to split strings programmatically.

Using Oracle dbms_alert using Delphi7 and ado

Dear Oracle experts,
I'm new to Delphi 7 and want to use Oracle alerts within my application.
Do you know whether it is possible to use it with the standard ADO Connection component ?
Do you have an coding example or some kind of referenc on a document how to do that ?
Best regards,

ODP.Net and Oracle 10g - Result set cache not getting updated

Hi,
I am new to Oracle and recently developed an ASP.Net 4.0 web application using ODP.Net 11g client for Oracle 10g server. I have written a stored procedure within a package to process some records. The problem I am having is that a query within the stored procedure is not fetching the latest data from database.
For example, if query picked up "Mark" as first name, I update the data to "Mark2", and query still gives "Mark" as output not "Mark2". If I update/recompile my package, "Mark2" will be returned by query. If i run the query directly in PL/SQL developer, the correct result is provided, but not from my application.
How can I fix this? Am I missing something very basic regarding caching configuration?
Any help would me much appreciated.
Thanks,
Cejoy.
There are a few caching technologies that Oracle uses. I assume you are asking about the client result cache. The Oracle client result set cache was introduced in 11g. You must use both an 11g server and 11g client for it to work. If you mix 10g with 11g, then it won't work. There is also an server result cache, which is new to 11g as well.
Here's more info on client result cache setup:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e16638/memory.htm#BGBBIACC
Hi Alex,
I moved to ODP.Net 10 and problem still exists. So it doesn't look like 11g result set caching that is causing this.
Is there any thing specific to be done for disabling caching?
Cejoy.
Sorry, I misread your initial post. The title of your post used the term "result set cache", which is a feature in 11g that automatically updates an Oracle client (or server) cache based on changes that occur in the DB. I assumed you were trying to use this 11g feature since it solves the problem of automatically updating an out of date cache.
Reading your post more closely, I see that you are not querying the DB directly via ODP.NET, but using a stored procedure, which returns the query result.
The first thing to do is isolate what component is caching the results: PL/SQL or ODP.NET. Can you try calling the stored procedure (not the query itself) via command line or Oracle GUI tool?

Visual C# Sync

I am writing a C# application using the Oracle 10 Lite ADO API. I am working on the section that will handle Syncing. I have created a event handler using the SetEventHandler function. My question is what are the different 11 stages that SyncEventArgs.stage reports? I just get numbers and would like to know what they represent.
Also I would like to know how to be sure the sync finished. There appear to be some flags in the defination for SyncEventArgs but I am not sure how to make use of them.
I have read the ADO section of the developer documentation however it really doesnt tell you a darn thing about the ADO API. Is there a reference document on the ADO API itself out there someplace?
Duplicate post.
